Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old woman with manslaughter after she said she used a blanket to keep a pacifier in the mouth of her fussy infant son and he suffocated.

Jamie M. McAdams gave Lakewood police varying accounts of how her 2-month old son, Jeremiah McAdams, died Jan. 12 after his nighttime feeding.

“her account of what happened and the scene and physical evidence didn’t match up,” Assistant Police Chief Mike Zaro said.

McAdams pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter Friday and was ordered held in the Pierce County Jail on $500,000 bail.

Deputy prosecutor Lori Kooiman said McAdams was arrested in Tennessee on allegations she abused her other two children. She didn’t know the outcome of the case. Charging documents indicate McAdams had two other children taken from her before she moved to Pierce County in December.

Police officers were called to McAdams’ home in the 5700 block of Hillcrest Drive Southwest about 4 a.m. Jan. 13 and found Jeremiah dead on the floor.

McAdams initially told officers she put her son to sleep in his car seat because she didn’t have a crib for him. She placed the car seat near the foot of her bed, then went to sleep. She said she checked on her son about 4 a.m. when her boyfriend got up. McAdams told officers she found Jeremiah lying face down on the carpet with his car seat on top of him.

“She reported that she never heard Jeremiah cry from the time she put him down to when she found him dead,” charging documents state. “She also did not hear the car seat flip over.”

Police launched an investigation into the child’s death.

During a second interview, McAdams told investigators she had placed Jeremiah in his car seat and set it on a small stool, court documents state. She said she didn’t know what caused the car seat to flip off the stool.

Detectives talked to McAdams a third time Thursday and she told them she’d accidentally killed her baby.

McAdams told detectives Jeremiah had been crying after his 8 p.m. feeding and when she gave him a pacifier, he spit it out, charging documents state. She told investigators she put the pacifier back in his mouth and “used a blanket to partially cover his face to keep the pacifier in his mouth,” according to the documents.

“She tucked the blanket into the sides of the car seat so the pacifier would not come out,” the documents state.

McAdams said that when she checked on him two to three hours later, he was dead, his pacifier still in his mouth.

She told detectives she feared she’d be blamed for Jeremiah’s death and, instead of calling police immediately, took steps to make it look like his car seat had tipped over.

She said she took the blanket that was covering her son and put it on the floor, according to court documents. She then put Jeremiah face down on the blanket and placed his pacifier next to his body.

“She took the car seat and put it on top of Jeremiah so she wouldn’t have to look at ‘it,’” the documents state.

McAdams said she went back to sleep for 30 minutes. She hoped her boyfriend of one week would find the baby in the morning and that maybe he would be blamed for the death, court documents state.

When the boyfriend got up and didn’t see Jeremiah, McAdams got up and “pretended to discover her baby was dead,” according to the documents. “She screamed for her mother, saying, ‘He’s dead, he’s dead,’ and asked her to call 911.”

The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the baby’s death a homicide and found signs he suffocated.

Investigators are working with Child Protective Services to learn more about McAdams’ history, Assistant Chief Zaro said.

As I’ve learned from my own experience, the need for maternity clothes doesn’t end with the baby being born. Sometimes women forget that they’ll need clothing for nursing as well. It’s equally important to think about clothing after the birth as before the birth. Luckily, there are some good choices for both.

As far as before the birth goes, there are several individual components and outfits that I’ve tried. One of the main things I’ve found is that it’s tough to find a dress suitable for the pregnant woman, and yet not too old-fashioned looking. I just hate how clothing for pregnant women is often so floral. That’s one aspect about Vertbaudet, the French baby, children’s and maternity clothing company is that they offer contemporary looking clothing for the expectant mother. there are several dresses offered by this company, and one of the models I found most comfortable was the Maternity Sweatshirt-dress. this is a sleeveless number, and I think the reason why it was so cosy is because it’s made entirely out of organic cotton fleece. there are eyelets in the mid-section of this dress, which is how you loosen and tighten it. that flexibility of fit made this dress really easy to put on at various stages in my pregnancy.

Another big hit with me from Vertbaudet was the rather plainly named Maternity Dress. this dress comes in a dark grey/green colour, and I think the short sleeve design is really cute. there are also pockets at the front.

The Maternity Tunic is yet another dress-like offering that gave me a flexible fit. this is because the waistband is elastic, so that no size is too big for this dress. let me tell you, when you’re right in the thick of your pregnancy, having clothes that still fit can be pretty good for the old self-esteem.

Having a top to wear while nursing is so important, and the options offered by Vertbaudet helped to make my nursing experience less painful than it could have been. most of the tops that Vertbaudet offers for nursing are in the t-shirt style, though there are also long sleeve options available. that being said, the tops for breastfeeding are all referred to as t-shirts on the company website. the convenient thing about the Vertbaudet Breastfeeding T-shirt is that it also has a flexible fit, so that even once I started losing weight the top wasn’t hanging off me. for the comfort factor, I preferred the 100% cotton version, which came in white. the sleeveless versions come in grey dark solid, purple light solid and black dark solid colours.

Another offering from Vertbaudet that I found really comfortable, as well as stylish, is the Maternity “Before and after” nightdress & cardigan outfit. this outfit’s title refers to the fact that it can be worn both before and after the baby is born. in other words, the fit is flexible like the aforementioned t-shirts. Because this outfit has a nightdress design, I felt confident wearing it out. the ties on the sweater help to make it feel more modern. Both grey and grey dark solid colours are available for this outfit.

Vertbaudet also offers a set of pyjamas that are specifically designed to be worn both during and after the pregnancy. These pyjamas are 97% cotton, which helped to make the fit comfortable against my skin.

As is to be expected, the maternity clothes that I’ve discussed here are just the small selection that I had a chance to try. there are lots more options for the pregnant and nursing mother out there.

In its boldest move into non-food yet, the Yorkshire-based grocer is in advanced talks with electricals retailer Carphone Warehouse, which co-owns the Best Buy Europe chain, about taking on the sites.

It is thought that all 11 Best Buy stores are under offer to Morrisons, although it could end up choosing only the best sites.

The 11 sites, all of which are enormous “sheds” on out-of-town retail parks, are up for sale following Carphone Warehouse’s decision late last year to pull its disastrous joint-venture with the American electrical goods giant, Best Buy.

Morrisons, which bought Kiddicare last year for £70m, has ambitions to turn the brand into Britain’s pre-eminent baby equipment retailer. apart from a single, large store in Peterborough, the retailer sells its buggies, high chairs and clothing over the internet.

Most of the products are priced at a considerable discount to high street retailers.

Morrisons’ plans to bring the operation to retail parks will alarm Mothercare, which is under serious pressure in Britain, after a series of profit warnings. a Maclaren Triumph buggy, for instance, popular with many parents, retails for £99 at Kiddicare compared with £115 at Mothercare.

It was believed that Morrisons was primarily interested in Kiddicare for its slick internet operation, including a sophisticated distribution system.

Scott Weavers-Wright, the chief executive of Kiddicare, has been appointed as head of non-food online at Morrisons as it prepares to finally join Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Asda and Tesco in launching an online supermarket.

But following a successful trial in which Kiddicare internet kiosks were placed inside Morrisons’ stores, allowing supermarket shoppers to order baby equipment to be delivered to their homes or local store, Morrisons wants to expand the brand.

The large out-of-town stores, if the deal goes ahead, “would be a fantastic showcase for the brand”, according to a source close to the talks. The shops would also be large enough to stock some of Morrisons fledgling non-food offer, as it starts to compete with the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda, all of which have large-scale clothing ranges as well as furniture on sale.

No deal has been signed, and it is expected that the supermarket will not be ready to announce anything when it unveils its Christmas trading figures on Monday. The Bradford-based supermarket group is expected to post the strongest like-for-like sales figures out of any of the big four supermarkets, with Shore Capital expecting growth of between 2pc and 3pc, compared with Tesco, which is expected to have seen sales fall by 1pc, or be flat at best.

Carphone Warehouse announced in November that it would close all of the 11 UK Best Buy stores after a failed 2008 tie-up with the US retailer of the same name. The shops, which are located from Southampton to Liverpool, are due to close this week.

Kiddicare was launched in 1974 by Neville and Marilyn Wright as the baby products supplier Rainbow. It is now run in Peterborough by their daughter Elaine Weavers-Wright and her husband Scott, who stayed on at the company after the Morrisons acquisition. It is thought that they are tied-in by a five-year shares deal.

Neither Carphone Warehouse nor Morrisons would comment on any deal.
